Nonreactive Research Flashcards
Nonreactive
Nonreactive research: methods of studying social behaviour without affecting it. This includes analysis of existing statistics, secondary analysis and historical and comparative research
Difference between Reactive and Nonreactive
-
Existing Statistics & Secondary Analysis
- Analysis of already existing statistical data
- Use of existing statistics (ex: Statistics Canada, Health, Census, etc)
- Use of statistical data from NGOs and other organizations
Nonreactive Research - Secondary Analysis
Form of research in which the existing data is analyzed by a different researcher and often for a different purpose. Survey data is widely used for the secondary analysis
Nonreactive Research - Content Analysis
• The systematic study and interpretation of specific products or artifacts (ex: news, film, words, newspapers, book, magazines, songs, emails, laws, tweets, etc)
• Is considered both qualitative and quantitative research methodology
o Can look to qualitative data and analyse it statistically
o In content analysis it is required to follow specific coding procedures, when communications/artifacts are coded
o Researchers must define the specific codes (ex: violent/non-violent behaviour)
Nonreactive Research - Discourse Analysis
- is a qualitative method for examining text to explore how meaning, knowledge and power are created and recreated in everyday experiences?
- Searches for thematic patterns and seeks to improve understanding of how language works in its social and cultural contexts
