‘…Can be defined as the systematic use of artistic processes, the actual meaning of artistic expressions in all of the different forms of the arts, as a primary way of understanding and examining experience by both researchers and the people they involve in their studies’

Some call it ‘art informed research’ – qualitative research influenced by the art (Cole and Knowels, 2008) - minimizes the chance of being mis-constructed
- Facilitates a practice of unique view of the world
- Art piece can express the phenomenon discussed
- Not always texts but other types of expressions

- Can engage various senses
- Has a believe that we experience the world through our bodies, through our senses
- ‘We do not have bodies, we are bodies’
- Art-based researchers look to the experiences holistically, as the mind and body are interconnected
- Seek to access bodily knowledge

- Descriptive and Evocative research
- Gives opportunity to experience a situation in a form that allows to walk in shoes of another (Eisner, 2008)
- Allows diverse ways to approach specific topic
- Engage people emotionally and experientially
- Can generate data which is deeply personal
- Communicates emotional aspects of experience
- More process not just product
- Has potential to give voice to the voiceless
