Q

How is energy made from coal?

A
  1. Coal is burnt to create heat.
  2. The water is boiled and turns to steam.
  3. The steam pushes the turbine round.
  4. The generator turns this energy into electricity.

Q

How is coal formed?

A
  1. Millions of years ago, trees and plants grow using energy from the Sun and carbon dioxide in the air.
  2. Plants die, and some fall into swamps and sink to the bottom.
  3. The mud and water stop the plants decaying.
  4. Over millions of years, the plant remains are covered by layers of sand and clay – sediment.
  5. The heat from the Earth and the pressure of the sediment pressing down turn the plant remains into coal.
  6. Now we burn that coal to release energy.

Q

How are oil and gas formed?

A
  1. Millions of years ago, plants in the ocean grow using energy from the sun and carbon dioxide in the water. Animals in the ocean get their energy from the plants.
  2. The plants and animals die and fall to the bottom of the seabed.
  3. The water stops the plants decaying.
  4. Over millions of years, the plant and animal remains are covered by layers of sand and clay – sediment.
  5. The heat from the Earth and the pressure of the sediment pressing down turn the plant and animal remains into oil and gas.
  6. Now we burn that oil and gas to release energy.
