What is NAFLD?
A condition in which fat accumulates in the liver in people who drink little or no alcohoL
What are the 3 entities of NADLF?

- Non alcohol steatohepatitis
- Fibrosis and cirrhosis
What are the risk factors of NAFLD?
- Diabetes
- Obesity
- Hypertriglyceridemia
- Hypertension
- Age
- Ethnicity
- Genetic factors
What is the natural history of NAFLD?
Normal liver
10-35% Steatosis
12-40% NASH
15% Cirrhosis
What is steatosis?
Increased fat in hepatocytes
What is NASH?
Non alcohol steatohepatitis
What is the NAFLD score?
High risk of fibrosis:
Age >45
Diabetes present
BMI>30
AST: ALT >1 (AST>ALT)
Platelet count <150
Albumin <34
What is AST?
Aspartate aminotransferase- one of the 2 liver enzymes
What is ALT?
Alanine aminotransferase- one of the 2 liver enzymes
What is Fib-4 score?
Fib 4= Age x AST level
————————
Platelet count x square root of ALT
What are the treatment options for NAFLD?
- Diet and weight reduction
- Exercise
- Insulin sensitizers
- Glucagon like peptide 1 (GLP-1)
- Vitamin E
- Weight reduction surgeries
