Nitrogen Cycle and fertillisers Flashcards
Ammonia
Inorganic chemical compound NH3, part of nitrogen cycle and used to make fertillisers
Ammonification
the process by which organic nitrogen is converted into ammonia or ammonium through the action of bacteria and fungi.
Denitrification
the process by which nitrogen compounds are converted into a gas and released into the atmosphere
Denitrifying bacteria
convert nitrates and nitrites in soil into nitrogen gas
Eutrofication
Eutrophication occurs when there is an excess of nutrients, such as nitrogen, in an environment. This can happen when nitrogen from fertilizers or other sources washes into waterways, causing an overgrowth of plants and algae. This can lead to harmful algal blooms, dead zones, and fish kills
