Mass Transport in Plants Flashcards
What is the function of lignin?
Making cell walls more rigid
What does xylem transport
water and mineral ions
what does phloem transport
organic substances like sugars
Why does water move up the plant
Water molecules are cohesive so when transpiration occurs water is pulled up the plant- cohesion tension theory
what is the structure of xylem
long tube like structures formed from dead cells joined at the ends, no ends so hollow tube
what are ther factors affecting transpiration rate, explain.
light intensity- stomata open during the day
temperature- higher temp faster rate due to water molecules having more energy
humidity- lower, faster rate due to concentation gradient of water
wind- faster- higher rate, increases water potential gradient
what do you use to estimate transpiration rate
potometer
what does a potometer measure
water uptake of a plant
Explain a plant mass transport dissection
use a scalpel and cut cross section as thin as possible. place in water until you use to stop from drying out. add drop of water and cover slip. place under microscope
what is the structure of phloem?
Formed from cells arranged in tubes. Contain sieve cell elements and companion cells.
What is the structure of a sieve plate and in what tissue are they found
Phloem. Living cells that form the tube for transporting solutes. No nucleus.
What is translocation
movement of solutes and amino acids around the plant
What is the structure of a companion and in what tissue are they found
Phloem. Carry out living functions for sieve cell
