release of nitric oxide in smooth muscle, activating guanylate cyclase converts GTP to cGMP resulting in a fall in Ca2+ levels

A
coronary arteries dilate and reduced venous return -> reduces LV work -> reducing myocardial oxygen demand

- hypotension
