Night Stuff Flashcards
Proper Scan technique
- The pilot must keep his head moving between several reference point to notice drift
a. The Reference points should be stationary objects - Detect drift by looking opposite of the direction of drift.
a.Forward for lateral drift
b.Abeam point for forward/aft drift
c. Scan inside to the RADALT for altitude drift.

3 Noticeable Improvements with the WP I2 tube
- Reduction in Halo size
- Increase in obstacle detection distance
- Reduced time for target correlation during ordnance employment
What part of the EM spectrum does the AN/AVS-9 use? (the NVGs) What is peak sensitive?
Near IR
.6-.9 microns (micrometers)
Define Illuminance?
what is the unit of measurement?
The amount of light generated from a source
2. Expressed in Lux or lumens per square meter(lm/m^2)
Define luminance?
State its unit of measurement?
the light that an object reflects.
expressed in foot-lamberts (ft-L)
The ratio between Illuminance and luminance is?
Albedo
What 3 factors influence NVD performance?
- Illumination/thermal Scene Factors
- Terrain contrast
- atmospheric conditions.
What 4 factors influence the amount of light provided by the moon?
- Lunar Cycle
- Moon Angle
- Lunar Albedo
- Variation in the earth-to-moon distance
How Long is the lunar month?
29.5 days.
IIMC is more probable on NVGs why?
Due to the NVGs seeing in the Near IR they can see through thin clouds and marine layers.
Cues that you’re going into IIMC:
HOGDLR
- Halo effect increases (M)
- Obscuration of the Moon and Stars (M)
- Graineness/Scintillation (M)
- Degraded Image
- Loss of Ground reference (M)
- reflection of the anticollision light
(M) = denotes in the NVD manual.
