Newborn environment Flashcards
1
Q
How does a newborn generate heat
A
They do this by burning brown fat
2
Q
Which infants are at high risk of producing too little heat 4
A
- Preterm infants: They have low amounts of brown fat
- Underweight for gestational age infants
- Hypoxic infants: Hypoxia causes the burning of brown fat
- Infections
3
Q
Which infants are at high risk for getting cold
A
- Small infants because of the high surface area
- Low fat: Decreased ability to insulate
- Cold wet environment
- Poor muscle tone because they cant stay flexed
4
Q
When should an infant be kept in an incubator to keep them warm
A
When they are under 1800g
5
Q
What are the complications of hypothermia in infants 2
A
- Hypoglycemia: Reserves are used up
- Hypoxia: As the blood cools it is more reluctant to give up O2
6
Q
What does hypoxia cause in an infant
A
Metabolic acidosis
7
Q
What are the complications of pyrexia in an infant 2
A
- Recurrent apnoea
- Dehydration
8
Q
What is the normal glucose
A
2.5 - 7
9
Q
What are the signs of hypoglycemia in infants 3
A
- Depressed brain function
- Overstimulated brain: Fits and seizures
- Excessive sweating
10
Q
What is the Tx for hypoglycemia in an infant
A
- 10mg/Kg of breastmilk
- 10 % IV neonatalyte
11
Q
What are the 2 complications of hyperglycemia and above what level is it dangerous
A
- Polyuria: Resulting in dehydration
- Interventricular hemorrhage
