Neurotoxcity Flashcards
What is neurotoxcity?
An adverse change to the chemistry, structure, function,of the nervous system either in development or maturity.
What is neuronpathy?
Toxins attacking the soma,it is irreversible.
Initial injury can cause necrosis and can progress to apoptosis. And Mercury can causes this neurotoxicty by binding to cysteine.
What is ROS and how is it created in the body?
ROS-reactive oxidative species
The highly reactive because they has unpaired/missing electrons. The body produces them but if there is too much it cause oxidative stress.Antioxidants get rid of them by giving the electrons but this leads to the antioxidant becoming ROS themselves.
What is most reactive radical ?
Hydroxyl radical
Example of ROS
Peroxide
Hydroxyl radical
Oxygen
Examples of antioxidants
Vitamin E
Vitamin C
Gluathaione
When there more free radicals than there is antioxidants what is it called?
Oxidative stress
What are the effects of methlymecury?
Paresthesia-prickling sensation felt around the body
Ataxia-slurred speech,lack of coordination,stumbling etc.
Neurasthenia
Vision,speech and hearing loss
Death
What are the catergories of drugs of abuse?
Opioids and barbiturates
What does the word anoxic mean?
Lack/no CO2
What does the hypoglycemic environment mean?
An environment with lack of glucose
What does Carbon monoxide does in relation to the nervous system?
It binds to the haem-reduce oxygen supply
Induces the production of ROS
this can cause headaches,dizziness,chest pain,vomiting
What is cynide?
Cynide is a colurless gas and it can exist in 3 forms, potssium, soduim and hydrogen.
