Nervous system Flashcards
What is the purpose of the nervous system?
The nervous system enables us to move(involuntary and voluntary),detect stimuli and respond to stimuli. It also helps us with our 5 senses. It controls the internal environment, memory and learning.
What is the CNS and the PNS?
The CNS is the central nervous system composed of the brain and the spinal cords.
The PNS is the peripheral nervous system consists of nerves and ganglia outside the brain and spinal cord.
Describe autonomic means
Autonomic is part of the nervous system that require no conscious effort-it it split into 2 parts-sympathetic and parasympathetic.
What is the difference between parasympathetic and sympathetic?
parasympathetic-rest and digest
sympathetic-fight or flight
What does somatic mean?
Somatic is part of the nervous system that carries out skeletal control-split into 2 part-sensory and motor
What is the difference between sensory and motor?
Sensory-detect stimuli
Motor -responds to the stimuli
What is the purpose of the soma/cell body?
1) where the signals are received from the dendrites
2) where genetic information is stored
3) maintains the structure of the neuron
What is the purpose of the dendrites?
They receive signals from the axon terminals of the previous neuron.
What is the synaptic cleft?
The gap between the axon terminal and the dendrites
In the brain what parts of the neuron is in the grey matter and what part are in the white matter?
Grey matter-cell bodies
White matter-mainly axons
What are qualities of neurons?
Longevity
High metabolic rate
Irreplaceable-amotic-you can’t develop another one
Name 4 parts of the brain
1) Cerebrum
2) stem
3) Diencephalon
4) cerebellum
What cell produce the mylien sheath?
Oligodendtries in the CNS
Schwann cells in the PNS
