Neurophysiology Flashcards
What is Tetrodotoxin?
blocks ions channels that generate AP and causes paralysis
What is the cause of Parkinson’s disease?
Death of neurons in the substantia nigra and the midbrain nucleus which have dopamine releasing neurons in them, decreasing the level of dopamine in the brain
What is the cause of Schizophrenia?
Too much dopamine in the brain due to overstimulation of neurons in the VTA which release into the nucleus accumbens and cause overstimulation
What is deep brain stimulation?
When an electrode and a probe is inserted into the brain attached to a pulse generator which sends electrical pulses to the brain and can be used to treat parkinsons
What is a monosynaptic reflex?
When there is no CNS interaction and the connection of the muscle goes directly to the spinal cord without CNS activation. Cell body of sensory neuron in the dorsal root ganglion and synapse in spinal cord
What is a polysynaptic reflex and where do the synapses occur?
Neuron has two axon terminals that synapse onto two motor neurons in the spinal cord. Means that when one muscle is being activated the other is being relaxed as there is two circuits going at once.
