Neuron Physiology Vocab Flashcards
Action Potential
A sequence of electrical activities that responds to and then delivers a stimulus
Equilibrium State
Condition in which the concentration and electrical diffusion are balanced
Excitatory Post-Synaptic Potential
Initial depolarization that occurs when excitatory neurotransmitter reaches a neuron
Inhibitory Post-Synaptic Potential (IPSP)
Prevents action potential by inducing hyperpolarization
Absolute Refractory Period
No action potential can be triggered during this time
Relative Refractory Period
An action potential can be triggered, but the amount of excitatory stimulus is greater than normal
Synapse
Points where one neuron connects with another
Pre-synaptic Cell
First cell that is sending message to the next cell
Post-Synaptic Cell
Cell that is receiving message from the pre-synaptic cell
Autoreceptors
Neurotransmitter receptors on the pre-synaptic neuron that inhibits release and/or synthesis of more neurotransmitter
