Spinal Cord Vocab Flashcards
Order of the Vertebrae
7 Cervical
12 Thoracic
5 Lumbar
5 Sacral
4 Coccygeal
White Matter
Series of ascending and descending tracts
Grey Matter
Cell bodies and unmyelinated axons
Dorsal Root Neuron
Sensory information comes in/periphery
Ventral Root Neuron
Motor information goes out/motor cells
Neuromuscular Spindle
Provides afferent information from muscle about muscle length and contraction
Dura Mater
Outer layer; tough, fibrous
Arachnoid Mater
Middle layer; thin, fine like a spiderweb
Ligamentum Denticulatum
Thin layer of tissue between the pia mater and arachnoid mater which restricts the movement of the cord within the subarachnoid space
Pia Mater
Inner layer lies against the surface of the cord; it is thin and vascular
Cerebrospinal Fluid
Protects the SC from trauma; removes waster; in the subarachnoid space
Subarachnoid Space
Between the arachnoid layer and the pia, filled with CSF
Central Canal
Lined with ependymal cells to aid in CSF circulation
Cauda Equina
Base of the cord throguhout the lumbar, sacral, and coccygeal segments
Foramen Magnum
Cord enters the skull
Medulla Oblongata
Cord terminates/originates here
Diaphragm
Flattens during inspiration, relaxes during expiration
External Intercostal Muscles
Expands thoracic cavity for inspiration
Internal Intercostal Muscles
Compression of thorax and decrease size of thoracic cavity
Rectus Abdominus
Compresses abdominal contents and pushes diaphragm up
Clavicular Breathing
Sternocleidomastoid can be contracted to elevate clavicle, sternum, and ribcage
