Brainstem Vocab Flashcards
Suture
Immobile joints where pieces of the skull connect
Brainstem
Comprised of the Medulla Oblongata, Pons, and midbrain
Pyramid
Series of descending corticospinal fibers
Decussation of the Pyramid
Point where the lateral corticospinal fibers cross over to the contralateral side
Medulla
Autonomic functions (respiration, circulation, digestion)
Pons
-Bridge that connects the medulla oblongata to the midbrain
-Relays info between brasin hemisphere
-Entry/exit for cranial nerves
-Houses cochlear and vestibular nuclei and SOC
Reticular Formation
-Influences autonomic nervous system, endocrine function, biological rhythm
-Arousal and activation
-Modulate muscles tone and reflexes through skeletal muscle
Cerebellar Peduncles
Connects cerebellum to the brainstem and cerebrum
Cortex of the Vermis (CP)
Influences movements of the neck, shoulders, thorax, abdomen, and hips
Intermediate Zones (CP)
Influence movement of the distal limbs (hands and feet)
Lateral Zones (CP)
Planning sequential moves of the body (speech)
Spinocerebellar Tract
Provides info from peripheral effectors (neuromuscular spindles)
Vestibulospinal Tract
Cereb outputs to vestibular nucleus which influences effectors through the SC
Auditory Brainstem Response
Evoked electrical potential generated by the auditory nerve and structures of the auditory brainstem
