Neuron Flashcards
Necleus
Cell core. Membrane bound found in the soma. Contains the nucleolus and chromosomes, necessary for the coded production of proteins within the cell
Soma
Cell body, organizes and keeps the cell functional. Most protein synthesis
Dendritic spines
Fine hair-like extensions on the soma. Receiver messages from other cells
Axon
Passes messages away from the cell body to other neurons, muscles or glands. Action potentials travel down the axon.
Axon terminals
Forms junctions with other cells.
Ligand-gated channels
Open when neurotransmitter binds to it, allowing ions to pass through the mambrane
Axon hillock
One neuron receives many signals, all potentials are integrated here at the start of the axon
Synapse
End of exon where vesicles with neurotrans release in action potential in presynaptic neuron
EPSP
Potential becomes positive
IPSP
Potential becomes less positive, can cancel out EPSP
