Brain Flashcards
Cerebral cortex
2 mm sheet with 6 cell laminae. Gyri most outer and sulci most inner. Really deep ar fissures
Corpus callosum
Connects two hemispheres
Brodmann areas
50 different areas defined in terms of function
Frontal lobe
Separated from parietal lobe by the central sulcus, with the motor cortex in precentral gyrus in front of it and the sensory cortex behind it
Temporal lobe
Separated from frontal lobe by lateral or sylvian fissure. Conserned with auditory info, high order visual, object and categorisation.
Insular cortex
Underneath frontal and temporal lobes and concerned with autonomic functions, motivation and emotional states
Parietal lobe
Located behind central sulcus and above lateral fissure. Contains somatosensory cortex which is part of the postcentral gyrus. Involved with sensory info
Occipital lobe
Separated from the parietal lobe by fine line from the perieto-occipital sulcus to the pre-occipital notch. Concerned with initial processing of visual info
Olfactory tracts
Located in the frontal lobe, arise from olfactory bulbs. Receive info from the nerve in the nasal cavity
Parahippocampal gyrus
Located in temporal lobe, covers the hippocampus which is involved with memory.
