Mechanosensory system Flashcards
Cutaneous/subcutaneous system
Processes tactile info like pressure, vibration, tension and touch. Different specialised receptors. Dorsal root ganglion - spinal cord - thalamus - ventral posterior nuclear complex - primary somatosensory cortex (S1)
Nociceptive system
Perceives pain and temperature. Pain created by the brain, Nociceptors are free nerve endings that perceive pain
Olfactory system
Olfactory epithelium: sheet of receptor neurons in nasal cavity. Different odour molecules cause perception of scent.
Taste system
Taste cells - brainstem - thalamus - anterior insula (gustatory cortex)
Melleability
Plasticity is higher, After amputation fingers nearby take up the area of amputated finger
