what is meningitis
infection in the protective membrane of the brain and spinal cord
give some clincial features if meningitis
fever cold, mottled skin raised RR and effort reduced SPO2 tachycardia pain in joints, muscles and limbs rash- bruise or blood blisters headache vomiting, abdo pain and diarrhoea drowsiness and confusion rigors seizures photophobia neck stiffness
what is a hemorrhagic stroke
weakened blood vessels rupture and blood leaks into the brain tissue
what is an iscemic stroke
a blockage
what are the symptoms of the postictal state
drowsiness, confusion, nausea, hypertension, headache and disorientating symptom
how long can the postictal state last
5 to 30 minutes
what is the postictcal stage
altered state or consciousness after an epileptic seizure
what are the indications of midazolam
convulsion lasting more than 5 minutes or more and still convulsion or 3 or more in an hour
always see if patient has their own in treatment plan
what are the indications of diazepam
prolonged or repeated seizure who are currently convulsing
what is diazepan
acts as a CNS depressent
what can you consider giving to individuals who are having a tonic clonic seizure
midazolam
diazepan
when should you consider status epilepticus
single seizure lasting more than 5 minutes
or repeated convulsions (three or more in a hour)
without recovery between convulsions
what do we need to ask in convulsions
estimate time and length, how many, what's the gap between them does the patient have a diagnosis is this an isolated seizure has any medication been taken any symptoms before the seizure past medical history alcohol intake potential provoking factors
what score in the mental test score would be classed as confused
score less than 7 confused
score less than 3 very confused
what is the questions asked in the mental test score
what is your age what is the rough time what is the year where are we right now who are these people what is your date of birth what year did world war 2 end what the name of the prime minister can you count back from 20 to 1 can you remember this address
