when completing a rapid assessment of a pregnant woman what should you look for
- establish how many weeks/ if the baby will be born premature
- does she have any meternity records
- asses for: blood stains. mucus plug lost, waters broke, contractions and bleeding.
if none of this is present contact local maternity unit
when should you complete a visual inspection of a pregnant woman
if indicated and with consent if their are regular contractions (1-2 intervals)
what to prepare if the birth is imminent
- privacy of the environment
- it is as worm as possible at least 25 degrees
- cover the area using clean towels and sheets
- gather clean warm items such as towels that can be pre- warmed
- use the maternity response pack
explain the process of a normal birth
- support the woman where she is most comfortable
- provide support and be reassuring
- encourage the mother to breath slowly
- provide pain relief
- allow babies head to be born slowly
- avoiding touching the umbilical cord
- once born pass to mother on her adbomen
- assess the baby once covered with towels and on mother belly
what is the main risk once a baby is born
low body temperature leading to hypothermia
those born before 37 weeks lose heart faster than others
what to do after birth of the baby
- keep the baby in mothers position where she can breast feed if she wishes
- wait until the umbilical cord has stopped pulsating and apply two cord clamps 3 cm apart and 15cm from the newborn
what should you do soon ish after the birth
- do not await the placenta birth if not midwife or local services are present, the priority is to ensure their is an assesment of moth and baby as soon as possible
