Neurological Flashcards
What is Epilepsy
Neurological ~Seizures
- Common neurological condition that affects the brain and causes frequent seizures.
- In Epilepsy sudden brust of electrical activity occur, large groups of neurones randomly fire electrial activity in an uncordinated way which reults in a epileptic seizure.
Aetiology (Causes) of epilepsy
Neurological ~ Seizures
- Low sodium
- Low gluocose
- Low oxygen levels
- Low calcium levels
- Drugs or Alcochol abuse
- Fever
Types of seizures: Focal (Partial seizures):
Simple focal seizure
Neurological ~Seizures
Electrical discharge starts in a localised part of the brain and does’nt impair consciousness.
Types of seizures: Focal (Partial seizures)
Complex focal seizure
Neurological ~Seizures
Electrial discharge starts in a localised part of the brain but does impair consciouseness.
Types of seizures: Focal (Partial seizures)
Focal seizures evolving to secondary generalised seizures
Neurological ~Seizures
Electrical discharge starts in a localised part of the brain and consciousness is impaired. The electrial discharge then spreads to the whole brain
Types of seizures: Generalised seizures (convulsive or non- convulsive)
Absence seizures
Neurological ~Seizures
Pateint loses consciousness for a short time and looks blank and is unreponsive
Types of seizures: Generalised seizures (convulsive or non- convulsive)
Myoclonic seizures
Neurological ~Seizures
Pateint may or may not loose consciousness. Muscle jerk
Types of seizures: Generalised seizures (convulsive or non- convulsive)
Tonic-clonic seizures
Neurological ~Seizures
Electrical discharge affects the whole brain
Status epilepticus
Neurological ~Seizures
Sezuires sometimes last a long time or one sezure follows another without a long gap in between.
What is a stroke
Neurological ~Stroke
When something blocks the supply of blood to part of the brain or when the blood vessels in the brain burst.
Risks factors for a stroke
Neurological ~ Stroke
- Smoking
- High blood pressure
- Obesity
- Physical inactivity
- Poor diet
Pathophysiogy of a
Ischaemic stroke
Neurological ~Stroke
Deficient oxygen and blood to the brain
Pathophysiogy of a
Haemorrhagic stroke
Neurological ~Stroke
Bleeding or leak of the blood vessel
Managment for a stroke
Neurological ~ Stroke
An IV injection of recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (TPA) — also called alteplase (Activase) or tenecteplase (TNKase)
What is parkinson’s disease
Neurological ~Parkinsons disease
- Most common neurological disorders
- afeects over 65 year olds
- Cause is unknown
