Cardiovascular Flashcards
Congenital cardic diseases
A heart condition or defect that develops in the womb, before a baby is born.
Development of atherosclerosis
A common condition that develops when a sticky substance called plaque builds up inside your arteries.
Risk factors for cardic disease
Can change (Modifiable)
Can change:
* Smoking
* Poor diet
* High blood Cholesterol
* Overweight/obesity
* Diabetes
* Excessive alchol
Risk factors for cardic disease
Can’t change (Non- Modifiable)
- Age
- Male gender
- Family history of cardicvascular disease
- Ethnic Orgin
Normal blood pressure regulation
120 mm Hg during systole (peak pressure in the arteries ) and 80 mm Hg during diastole (the resting phase)
Hypertension
Condition in which the blood vessels have persistently raised pressure
Ischaemic heart disease (IHD)
Heart problems caused by narrowed heart arteries
Acute coronary syndromes
A heart attack, where there is a significant blockage in the coronary arteries
Heart failure
A condition that develops when your heart doesn’t pump enough blood for your body’s needs.
Arrythmias
Sinus rhythm
The pace of your heartbeat that’s set by the sinus node, your body’s natural pacemaker
Arrythmias
Artial fibillation
An irregular and often very rapid heart rhythm that can lead to blood clots in the heart
Arrythmias
Cariac arrest rhythms
An abnormal heart rhythm
Cardiovascular
Define Haemoglobinopathies
Inherited genetic conditions affecting the haemoglobin component of blood.
What is Atherosclerosis?
The build- up of fatty plaques within the wall of arteries causing gradual narrowing of the lumen of the blood vessels.
What are the causes of atherosclerosis?
- The process can begin in childhood
- Hypercholesterolaemia increases the incidence and progession of disease
- Smoking increase levels of plasma fibrinogen
- Hypertension increases arterial wall stress
- Diabetes is associated with hypertension and dyslipidaemia
