Neuroimaging Flashcards
1
Q
MRI
A
Magnetic Resonance Imaging
- Gross structure of the brain
- Diagnosis of new onset psychosis or dementia
- Magnetic field projected onto the brain to delineate gray and white matter
- Structural, functional, metabolic imaging
- Useful for:
1. Structural imaging
2. Detecting brain function
3. Detecting areas of demyelination - No patients with metal objects in bodies
2
Q
EEG
A
Electroencephalography
- Electrical impulses for the brain cortex
- Causes of szrs to diagnose epilepsy
- Evaluate brain tumors, abscesses
- Subdural hematoma
- Cerebral infarcts
- Intracranial heorrhages
- Measures electrical activity of the brain from leads connected to surface electrodes placed on the scalp and nasopharyngeal area
- Takes about 45 minutes
3
Q
CT
A
Computed Topography
- Cheap, fast, do it first!
- Tophographic map of brain and spinal cord
- Specific and or minute abnormalities are enhanced
- Assess cognitive function
- Evaluation of patients with
1. Migraines
2. Trauma
3. Vertigo/dizziness - Pinpoint the following conditions
1. Ischemia
2. Areas of dysfunction in dementia
3. Areas of brain abnormalities associated with schizophrenia
4. Tumors
4
Q
PET
A
Positron Emission Topography
Localize mental activities
May show either increased or decreased activity
Primarily research and very expensive
Maps metabolic activity, blood flow, NT activity,
Test duration is 2-3 hours
