Neuroimaging Flashcards

Q

MRI

A

Magnetic Resonance Imaging

  • Gross structure of the brain
  • Diagnosis of new onset psychosis or dementia
  • Magnetic field projected onto the brain to delineate gray and white matter
  • Structural, functional, metabolic imaging
  • Useful for:
    1. Structural imaging
    2. Detecting brain function
    3. Detecting areas of demyelination
  • No patients with metal objects in bodies

Q

EEG

A

Electroencephalography

  • Electrical impulses for the brain cortex
  • Causes of szrs to diagnose epilepsy
  • Evaluate brain tumors, abscesses
  • Subdural hematoma
  • Cerebral infarcts
  • Intracranial heorrhages
  • Measures electrical activity of the brain from leads connected to surface electrodes placed on the scalp and nasopharyngeal area
  • Takes about 45 minutes

Q

CT

A

Computed Topography

  • Cheap, fast, do it first!
  • Tophographic map of brain and spinal cord
  • Specific and or minute abnormalities are enhanced
  • Assess cognitive function
  • Evaluation of patients with
    1. Migraines
    2. Trauma
    3. Vertigo/dizziness
  • Pinpoint the following conditions
    1. Ischemia
    2. Areas of dysfunction in dementia
    3. Areas of brain abnormalities associated with schizophrenia
    4. Tumors

Q

PET

A

Positron Emission Topography
Localize mental activities
May show either increased or decreased activity
Primarily research and very expensive
Maps metabolic activity, blood flow, NT activity,
Test duration is 2-3 hours
