Intellectual Disability (Intellectual Developmental Disorder)
Criterion A: deficits in general mental abilities-reasoning, problem solving, judgment, academic learning etc
Criterion B: impairment in everyday adaptive function in comparison to an individual’s age, gender and socioculturally match peers- communication, social participation and independent living across multiple domains
Criterion C: onset of intellectual and adaptive deficits during the developmental period- based on both clinical assessment and standardized testing of intellectual and adaptive functions
Severity-mild, moderate, severe and profund
Global Developmental Delay
-reserved for individuals under the age of 5 when the clinical severity level can’t be assessed during early childhood
-individual fails to me developmental milestones in several areas
-individuals who aren’t able to undergo systematic assessment
-requires reassessment
Unspecified Intellectual Disability
-reserved for individuals over the age of 5 when assessment is not possible because of impairments such as blindness, deafness, co-occurring mental disorder etc
