Neurodevelopment 1 Flashcards
Trilaminar parts of the third week
-Ectoderm
-Mesoderm
-Endoderm
Ectoderm
Skin and nervous system
Mesoderm
Muscles, connective tissue, skeleton
Endoderm
Digestive and respiratory tracks
Neural tube
-Develop into brain and spinal cord
-Has an alar plate and basal plate
-Rosral 2/3 becomes brain
-Caudal 1/3 becomes spinal cord
Alar plate
-Will form sensory portions of the spinal cord (dorsal horn)
Basal plate
-Will form motor portions of the spinal cord (ventral horn)
Proencephalon becomes…
Telencephalon and Diencephalon
Telencephalon contains
-Cerebral hemispheres
-Basal Ganglia
-Limbic lobe
Diencephalon contains
-Thalamus
-Hypothalamus
Mesencephalon becomes
Midbrain
Rhombencephalon becomes
Hindbrain
-Pons
-Cerebellum
-Medulla
Developing connections
-Neurons search out the appropriate connections
-This is done by the growth cone
-This is guided by chemical signals
–Attractive cues
–Repulsive cues
Pruning
-All the neurons are there by the 25th gestational week
-After this point brain growth reflects increased synaptic connections and myelination
-Gradually, the number of neurons and the number of connections decreases (pruning)
-This is critical for learning
