Neuroanatomy of Emotion Flashcards
What is the function of the limbic system?
Emotion, behaviour, long-term memory, olfaction and motivation. (Learning potentially too)
What structures are found in the limbic system?
Hippocampus, amygdala, fornix, mamillary bodies, cingulate gyrus, anterior nuclei of thalamus and hypothalamus
What is the role of the papez circuit?
Circuit connecting main structures of the limbic system. (Involved in memory and emotions)
Where are the hippocampus and amygdala found?
Temporal Lobe
What is the function of the hippocampus:
Formation of long term memories
What is the neuroendocrine function of the Pituitary?
Posterior: Neuroendocrine: ADH, oxytocin
Anterior: Portal Vein System e.g. Prolactin, TSH
What is the role of the amygdala?
Emotional memory and producing instinctive emotional output
What is the role of the mammillary bodies?
Recollective memory
