Gross Structure Flashcards
What are the 3 meningeal layers?
1) Dura Mater
2) Arachnoid mater
3) Pia Mater
What are the 3 functions of the meninges?
1) Protect brain and spinal cord from injury
2) Space for the flow of CSF
3) Framework for cerebral and cranial vasculature
What are the 2 connective tissue sheets of dura mater?
1) Endosteal Layer (Lines the cranium)
2) Meningeal Layer
What vein do the dural venous sinuses drain into?
Internal Jugular Veins
What are the 3 dural reflections?
1) Falx Cerebri
2) Tentorium Cerebelli
3) Falx Cerebelli
What does the Falx Cerebri do?
Separates the 2 cerebral hemispheres (Found in Longitudinal Fissure)
Where is the tentorium cerebelli located?
Lies over posterior cranial fossa and cerebellum
What does the Falx Cerebelli do?
Separates the 2 cerebellar hemispheres
What is found in the subarachnoid space?
CSF and Arteries
Describe the function of the BBB?
Prevents passage of some substances from circulation into nervous tissue, protecting the brain
Which meningeal layer is avascular?
Arachnoid mater
