balance and eye movements
where is the flocculonodular lobe?
What is the function of the primary fissure?
separate the anterior and posterior cerebellar lobes
Where is the primary fissure of the cerebellum?
What is the function of the vermis?
coordinates the movements of the proximal body and limbs
where is the vermis?
What is the function of the paravermal area?
distal voluntary movements
- spinocerebellum
where is the paranvermal area?
What is the function of the dentate nucleus?
motor planning
regualtes highly skilled movements
where is the dentate nucleus?
where is the dentate nucleus on a transverse view?
What is the function of the globose nucleus?
closely connected with the vestibular system and predominantly involved in balance
where is the globes nucleus?
What is the function of the emboliform nucleus?
participates in the spinocerebellum, a system that regulates the precision of distal limb movements
where is the emboli form nucleus?
What is the function of the interposed nuclei (emboliform+globose nuclei)?
responsible for coordinating agonist/antagonist muscle pairs
What is the function of the fastigial nucleus?
balance, trunk posture, head movement
where is the fastigal nucleus?
where is the fastigal nucleus on the stain?
What is the function of the vestibulocerebellum?
maintain the stability of the head on the body. It acts on the neck muscles via the lateral VST, to maintain a steady head position despite movements of the body, and thereby maintains visual fixation on distant objects, such as when a person is running or in a moving vehicle
-flocculonodular lobe
What is the function of the spinocerebellum?
unconscious proprioception
–intermediate hemisphere
What is the function of the cerebrocerebellum?
It is involved in planning movements and motor learning. It receives inputs from the cerebral cortex and pontine nuclei and sends outputs to the thalamus and red nucleus
-lateral hemisphere
What is the function of the superior cerebellar peduncle?
-mostly efferents
- from cerebellum to thalamus and midbrain (red nucleus)
What is the function of the middle cerebellar peduncle?
conveys information from the cerebrum and pons to the cerebellum; main afferent pathway into the cerebellum
What is the function of the inferior cerebellar peduncle?
-mainly afferents: inferior olivary nucleus (medulla) to cerebellum
coordination of movement and proprioceptive
Which branch of the vertebral artery supplies the cerebellum?
PICA
Which branches of the basilar artery supplies the cerebellum?
AICA and SCA
What are the afferent tracts to the cerebellum?
corticopontocerebellar pathway, spinocerebellar tracts, cuneocerebellar tract, hypothalamus
Describe the corticopontocerebellar pathway.
connects cerebrum with the cerebellum passing through the pons and the contralateral middle cerebellar peduncle.
Describe the spinocerebellar tracts.
carry unconscious proprioceptive information gleaned from muscle spindles, Golgi tendon organs, and joint capsules to the cerebellum.
Describe the cuneocerebellar tract.
Receives information from the arms using muscle spindles and GTO’s. Uses inferior peduncle
Describe the hypothalamus to cerebellum connection.
Through a multitude of direct and indirect pathways.
What are the efferents from the cerebellum?
- vestibulocerebellar output to vestibulospinal tracts
- spinocerebellar output to vestibulospinal, medial reticulospinal, and medial corticospinal tracts
- cerebrocerebellum output to lateral corticospinal and rubrospinal tracts
What cerebellar peduncle does the afferent corticopontocerebellar pathway tracts use?
contralateral middle cerebellar peduncle
What cerebellar peduncle does the afferent superior spinocerebellar tract use?
inferior cerebellar peduncle
What cerebellar peduncle does the afferent ventral spinocerebellar tract use?
superior cerebellar peduncle
What cerebellar peduncle does the afferent rostral spinocerebellar tract use?
both the superior and inferior cerebellar peduncles
What cerebellar peduncle does the afferent cuneocerebellar tract use?
inferior cerebellar peduncle
What cerebellar peduncle does the hypothalamus use?
superior and middle cerebellar peduncle
