Nerve roots of Sciatic nerve
L4-S3 nerve roots
Compression (due to what) at which level most common of sciatica
L5 or S1 (due to disc herniation or spinal foraminal stenosis)
Ataxic gait, urinary incontinence, and dementia in an elderly patient
Normal pressure hydrocephalus
Mechanism of injury in normal pressure hydrocephalus
Decreased absorption of CSF leads to increased CSF volume and ventricular enlargement, traction placed on cortical efferent and afferent nerve fibers in the corona radiata –> no sensation of bladder fullness or control over micturition –> bladder empties reflexively when full i.e. urge incontinence. Voluntary relaxation of the urethral sphincter remains in tact.
Upper motor neuron injury signs
Spastic paralysis, clasp knife rigidity, hyperreflexia, Babinski sign
Lower motor neuron injury signs
Flaccid paralysis, hypotonia, hyporeflexia, Muscle atrophy and fasiculations
