Common Brain Lesions Flashcards
Klüver-Bucy syndrome—disinhibited
behavior (e.g., hyperphagia, hypersexuality,
hyperorality).
Amygdala (bilateral)
Disinhibition and deficits in concentration,
orientation, judgment; may have reemergence
of primitive reflexes.
Frontal Lobe
Hemispatial neglect syndrome (agnosia of the
contralateral side of the world).
Nondominant parietal-temporal cortex
Reduced levels of arousal and wakefulness (e.g.,
coma)
Reticular activating system (midbrain)
Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome—confusion,
ophthalmoplegia, ataxia; memory loss
(anterograde and retrograde amnesia),
confabulation, personality changes.
Mammillary bodies (bilateral)
May result in tremor at rest, chorea, athetosis
Basal ganlgia
Intention tremor, limb ataxia, loss of balance;
damage to cerebellum –> ipsilateral deficits;
fall toward side of lesion
Cerebellar hemisphere
Truncal ataxia, dysarthria.
Cerebellar vermis
Anterograde amnesia—inability to make new
memories.
Hippocampus (bilateral)
Eyes look away from side of lesion
Paramedian pontine reticular formation
Eyes look toward lesion
Frontal eye fields
