neuro 4 - brainstem and cranial nerves Flashcards
3 major divisions of the brainstem
midbrain
pons
medulla blongata
midbrain
vision, hearing, motor control, sleep and wakefullness, alertness, temperature regulation
pons
respiration, control of involuntary actions, sesnory roles (hearning, equilibrium, taste), motor roles (eye movement, facial expressions, chewing, swallowing, secretion of saliva and tears
medulla oblongata
control of ventilation, cardiovascular and vasomotor control, reflex centres of vomiting, coughing, sneezing and swallowing
cranial nerves attatch to the
brainstem
except olfactory and optic
which cranial nerves dont attach to the brainstem
- olfactory and 2. optic - attatch directly to the frebrain
oolfactory and optic cranial nerves attach to the
forebrain
cranial nerves that attch to the brainstem
- oculomotor
- trochlear
- trigeminal
- abducens
- facial
- vestibulocochlear
- glossopharyngeal
- vagus
- accessory
- hypoglossal
sesnory fibres terminating at afferent nuclei of the brainstem
trigeminal sensory nucleus
cochlear and vestibular nuclei
nucleus solitarius
motor fibres terminating at efferent nuclei
occulomotor nuleus
trochlear
abducens
how to identify the midbrain
cerebral aqueduct
colliculus dorsally
inferior peduncle fossa anteriorly
how to identify the pons
cut edge of cerebellar penducles laterally
smooth contour anteriorly
how to identify the rostral medulla
floor of 4th ventricle dorsally
olive laterally
pyrimid and anterior median fissure anteriorly
presence of CNs
how to identify the cuadal medulla
looks similar to a spinal cord
central canal in the middle
pyramid anteriorly and anterior median fissue
circular profile
