neural control Flashcards
breathing is controlled by?
pons and medulla (brainstem)
what is basal breathing?
baseline breathing to keep us alive
this is controlled by the dorsal respiratory region of the medulla
the medulla constantly spontaneously fires inspiratory neurons
what does the PONS do in breathing?
acts like a switch as the neurons are costantly firing you need to tell them to stop at some point
this increases the respiratory rate thru the pneumotaxic area
function of hypothalamus
hormone production
homeostatis
organisnig survival behaviours
contains the biological clock
control of emotion including rage and fear and pleasre
controls automatic NS
controls endocrine system via pititury gland
pituitary gland=
has a posterior and anterior lobe
it communicates with hypothalamus to alter hormone secretion
anterior= indirect vvia hormones posterior= direct via synaptic transmission
indirect control
indirect control involves hormons released from specilaised nurons of the hypothalamus
these hormones travel to the anterior pituitary gland via blood vessels
cortisol release
paraventricular nucleus secretes CRH which stimulates anterior gland to release ACTH -
this enters the blood stimulating the adrenal cortex ti reklease cortisol and inact a stress response
posterior pituitary gland
controls directcontrol via synaptic transmission
the hypothalamus produces posterior hormones and directly controls their scretion but are released by posterior gland
lateral hypothalamus
role in hunger
ventromedial hypothalamus
role in satiety
