ear conditions Flashcards
Labyrinthitis - what is it
inner ear (labyrinth) becomes inflamed due to an infection. the signals that go through the vestibular division of the cranial nerve get mixed up and balance and hearing is effected
treatments= Gp may provide antihistamines or motion sickness tablets
symptoms and explanations of labyrinthitis
fizziness/ nausea/ hearing loss/ vertigo
normal ear function= if we move our head to one side one side of the ear will produce faster signal, and the other would slow down, and these signals are sent to the brain. In labyrnthitus if one ear is to stop working the other would fire at a normal rate so the brain would be fooled into thinking our head is moving
inflammation can also damage the cochlea causing hearing loss
how does vertigo occur?
ocotonia are displaced
as the brain will think the head is somewhere else where it isnt thus creating a spinning sensation
As the inner ear is connected to eye muscles this can cause the eyes to move which makes it look like the room is spinning.
what is tinnitus
Ringing in the ear
may be due to issues including the audiotory cortex
linked to= injury, hearing loss, infection, meiners disease, and issues relating the circulatory system
Treatments= CBT, councelling/ retraining therepy
