What is a URL
Short for Uniform Resource Locator and is a web address
what does each part of a web address mean example : www.abc.co.uk/images/logo.jpg
www - hosted of the www
abc - name of organisation
co - company
uk - based in the uk
images - folder location
logo.jpg - file name on site
What does HTTP stand for?
HyperText Transfer Protocol
What is HTTP
A set of rules used by web browers and servers to exchange information. Allows thing to run smoothly
How is data sent of the internet?
In small chunks or packets
What is an IP address
An address like your home address which allows data to be sent or requested
What is a DNS
Domain name server
What does a DNS do
Converts URLs into IP address (URL’s are for humans, easy to remeber, IP addresses are for computers and DNS are the translators)
How is data sent
Wifi, undersea cables, ethernet cables
Pros and Cons of Wireless conectivity
Cons: Must be close to a WiFi hotspot or router, Slower than wired connection, wall interference, security risk
Pros: No need to be physically connected, can connect mobile devices
What is Bandwith
The amount of data that can be carried at a time
How are connection speeds measured?
In Mbps (Megabits per second)
Difference between upload and download
Download is receiving data from internets. Uploading is sending data from your computer to somewhere on the internet.
What is broadband?
High speed connections to the internet
Calculating download speed
File size in megabytes/ (download speed in megabits/8)
