Network Characteristics Flashcards
What Is A Node?
Devices or Points With A IP Address
What Is Peer To Peer Networking?
there is no central server. Instead, each workstation is loaded with the appropriate applications needed for that machine and local resources such as an attached printer folder or external hard drive can be shared.
The peer-peer network form is most commonly found in the home or a small office.
3 Advantages?
- No need for a Network operating system.
- Doesn’t need an expensive server.
- No need for specialist staff.
3 Disadvantages?
- Files and folders can’t be centrally backed up.
- Files and resources aren’t centrally organised into a specific shared area.
- Ensuring viruses aren’t introduced to the network is the responsibility of the individual.
What Is Client Server?
With a client server network the files will not be stored on the hard drive of each workstation. Instead they will be stored on a specialised computer called a server. A server is designed to efficiently provide data to a remote client.
3 Advantages Of A Client Server?
- Files are stored in a central location
- Backup And Network Security Is Managed Centrally
- Users can access centrally located files
Definition Of Bus Network
In a bus network all the workstations, servers and printers are joined to one cable
3 Advantages?
- Easy to install
- Easy to add extra workstations
- Best choice for temporary networks
3 disadvantages?
- Problem with central cable means the whole network goes down
- Lots of workstations = slow data transfer
- Low Security All workstations have access to all data
Star Topology Definition
The workstations radiate out from one point in a star shape
3 Star topology advantages?
- Very Few Data Collisions - every workstation has dedicated cable to server
- Very Reliable one workstation is down the rest will still be up
- Good Security
3 Disadvantages of Star Topology?
- Most Expensive Server Layout
- Installing Network needs experts
- Server crashes no one will be able to access files
What is a mesh topology?
full mesh topology, every computer in the network has a connection to each of the other computers in that network
3 Advantages Of Mesh Topology?
- It can withstand high data traffic at the same time
- Expansion can be done without distribution
- If one component fail the rest stay up
3 Disadvantages Of Mesh Topology?
- Connections are not fully utilised
- Overall cost of the network is too high!
- Setup and maintenance costs a lot and is a frustration
