Computer Components Flashcards
What Does Northbridge On a Motherboard do?
The northbridge is a chip inside a computer that connects the (CPU) to other primary components in the system Like RAM
What Does Southbridge Do On A Motherboard?
The southbridge chip connects the northbridge to other components inside the computer, including hard drives, network connections, USB and Firewire devices, the system clock, and standard PCI cards.
What Is Volatile Memory?
RAM memory that will only keep its data only if the power stays on.
When the power is switched off, all the data is gone
What Is Non Volatile Memory?
ROM memory that does not require power to keep its data
What type of backup would a “Media Student Use”
Full Backup On Cloud OR On a External HDD/SSD
What type of backup would a “Network Manager Use”
FTP (File Transfer Protocol) Backup OR Offsite Backup
What Type Of Backup Would A “Website Service Use”
Remote Backup, the backup website is stored in a remote area.
What Does Primary Storage Relate To ROM OR RAM?
RAM
3 Advantages Of Hard Drives
- Available with large amount of Storage Capacities
- You Can Read & Write To The Drive
- Quite Fast Transfer Speeds
3 Disadvantages Of Hard Drives
- They Have Moving Parts Making them less durable than other alternatives like (SSD’s)
- Slow Compared With Optical Media’s
What Is the Better Alternative For HDD and give a benefit and drawback of it
Alternative = SSD’s (Solid Slate Drives)
Benefit = No Moving Parts More Durable
Drawback = The Higher Storage Capacities Can Be Really Expensive
USB 3 Advantages?
- Used Frequently To Store Media Files And Documents
- It is a standardised feature and so it won’t be hard trying to find a USB compatible device
- There are no moving parts and so this means that it’s more durable and portable
USB 2 Disadvantages?
- USB Drives only have a limited read write and erase cycles before the drive fails
- USB Drives are more expensive per unit of storage than larger hard drives, but are less expensive in less Gigabyte forms like 8GB or 16GB
