Connectivity Methods Flashcards
What Is A LAN?
A local area network (LAN) is a network that connects computers and other devices in a relatively small area, typically a single building or a group of buildings.
3 Advantages Of A LAN?
- you can share peripherals like laser printers
- a file server can be used to store and share documents and files centrally
- emails can be sent between computers
3 Disadvantages Of LAN?
- If a virus gets on a LAN network then it will spread quickly
- If The Server Fails then no one can access any files or folders
- Building A LAN is expensive due to all computers needing cables or wireless technology
What is Ethernet?
A system for connecting a number of computer systems to form a local area network
3 Advantages Of Ethernet?
- Very Reliable does not fail often
- Fast Transfer Speeds
- Reduces Data Collisions
3 Disadvantages Of Ethernet?
- No Way To Prioritise Traffic
- Limited Cable Length
- 10MBPS for base version of Ethernet
What Is A Token Ring?
All Devices Connected in a ring
3 Advantages Of Ethernet?
- Excellent Performance under high load
- Easy Detection and Correction of cable errors
- TP (Twisted Pair) Cable Is Cheap
3 Disadvantages of Ethernet?
- Low Load = Delay in speed
- Difficult to configure
- If the cable breaks the whole network goes down
What Does WAN Stand For?
Wide Area Network
3 Advantages Of WAN?
- Everyone on the network can access the same data = everyone’s data is updated
- Anyone can connect no matter where they are
- Good for big business and schools because data can be remotely accessed anywhere.
3 Disadvantages Of WAN?
- WAN is expensive to setup
- WAN’s are not easy to use
- Low Bandwidth = Low Speeds
What Is ADSL?
Type of DSL broadband communications technology used for connecting to the Internet.
3 Advantages Of ADSL?
- Most Common Fast Type of connection to the internet
- You can talk on the phone whilst using the internet
- Speeds are much higher than Dial Up
2 Disadvantages Of ADSL
- A DSL connection works better the closer you are to the telephone
- This service is not available in all locations.
Leased Line What Is It?
Leased Line Is a dedicated link. Such as between offices for a big business.
Leased Line 2 Advantages?
- It’s costly – but only carries your data so is guaranteed to give ultrafast speeds
- Larger Files get really high bandwidth
Leased Line 2 Advantages?
- Costly
2. Installation can take weeks or even months
Definition of a ISDN?
allow you to connect to the Internet and transmit digital data over ordinary telephone copper wire as well as other media.
ISDN 2 Advantages?
- high data rate because of digital scheme which is 56 kbps.
- SDN takes only 2 seconds to launch a connection
ISDN 2 Disadvantages?
- ISDN is much more expensive than its successor being ADSL
2. More Expensive than DSL and cable
What Is WLAN?
devices on a WLAN communicate via Wi-Fi.
What Is A MAN?
covers town or city (bigger than LAN, smaller than WAN).
3 Advantage Of MAN?
Provides a larger and more controllable computer network,
requires fewer resources compared to LAN
cost effective way of sharing common resources.
