Q

Can private IP addresses be transmitted over the internet?

A

No, a request from a computer with a private IP address will hit the router, then use Network Address Translation (NAT) or Port Address Translation (PAT) to send out its request.

Q

What is Port Address Translation?

A

Router remembers which computer sent a request to the internet by assigning it a random high number port. Therefore when the request is received, it can send the request to that specific computer.

Q

What is Network Address Translation?

A

The process of changing an IP address when it passes through the router.

Note: This was originally used to conserve the limited number of IP addresses, but had the side effect of helping security by hiding computers behind the router.
