Nervous System Anatomy and Physiology Flashcards
What are the divisions of the nervous system?
There are 2 divisions, The Central Nervous system and The Peripheral Nervous system
What is the Central Nervous system?
The Central Nervous system is composed if the brain and the spinal cord. This is the central command center where all communication and actions occur in the body.
What is the Peripheral Nervous system
The Peripheral Nervous system is composed of the Nerves that branch off from the spinal cord and innervate the body. This system send the signals by the brain to the target locations.
What is the nervous system responsible for?
Transmiting signals between the body and the brain.
What is the basic unit of the Nervous system?
Neurons
What are neurons composed of?
Cell body, dendrites, and axon.
Cell body:
Contains nucleus and organelles
Dendrites:
Short, Branch-link extensions that generate electrical impulses
Axon:
Long extension that transmits signal to other neurons.
What are the two kinds of neurons in the nervous system?
Sensory (afferent) Nuerons
Motor (efferent) Nuerons
Sensory (afferent) Neurons :
Sends messages to the central nervous system
Motor (efferent) Nuerons:
Sends messages to the muscles. Voluntary actions such as movement of the limbs.
What are the types of motor neurons?
Autonomic Nervous system and Somatic Nervous system
Autonomic Nervous system:
Involuntary actions such as heart rate, digestion, and respiration
Somatic Nervous system:
Voluntary actions such as movement of the limbs.
