Nervous System Flashcards
function of the nervous system
made up of the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves; the system that senses the environment and coordinates appropriate responses
neuron
communication specialist
structure enables them to send information around your body
central nervous system
consists of the brain and spinal cord
brain
an organ of soft nervous tissue, functioning as the coordinating center of sensation and intellectual and nervous activity
spinal cord
carries impulses to and from the brain, and serves as a center for initiating and coordinating many reflex acts
peripheral nervous system
consists of nerves that connect to the central nervous system
“motor” nerves
nerves that control voluntary muscles
“sensory” nerves
nerves that carry information from the sensory organs (eyes, ears, taste buds, and touch receptors) to the brain
“automatic” nerves
nerves that regulate involuntary functions such as breathing, heartbeat and digestion
