Cells Flashcards
Cytoplasms
All organelles are suspended in cytoplasm
Mostly water with other substances the cell stored until needed can change from jelly to liquid
Cell theory
- All living things are made up of one or more cells and their products
- Simplest unit that can carry out all life processes
- Come from other cells not non living things
Prokaryotes
Simple, single celled
No nucleus or other membrane bound organelles
Eukaryote
Have a complex internal organization
Has a nucleus
Cell membranes
Semi permeable
Flexible and double layered
Supports the cell and allows some substances to enter while keeping others out
Nucleus
“Brain”
Contains genetic info that controls all cell activities ( genetic info stored in chromosomes ) contains DNA (carries coded instructions)
Mitochondria
Makes energy available for the cell
Contains enzymes that help with cellular respiration
Endoplasmic reticulum
“Subway system”
3D network of branching tubes and pocket fluid filled tubes transport materials such as proteins through the cell
Golgi body
Collects and processes materials to o be removed from the cell
Makes and secretes mucus
Vacuoles
Single layer of membrane enclosing fluid
Functions include removing unwanted substances from the cell and maintaining internal fluid pressure (turgor) within the cell
Cell wall
Provides support for the cell and protection from physical injuries
Chloroplasts
Gives green colour to plants and helps with photosynthesis
Vacuole (plants)
When full of water, turgor pressure keeps the cells plump and keeps stems and leaves firm
