7 Types of Light and Ray Model Flashcards
Incandescence
Process of producing light as a result of high temperature
Ex. Light from burning candle
Electric discharge
Produced by an electric current passing through gas (electricity causes gas to glow)
Ex. Lightning, neon signs
Phosphorescence
Phosphors absorbs light energy, mainly UV light
Ex. Glow in the dark stickers
Fluorescence
Occurs when an object absorbs UV light and immediately released the energy as visible light
Ex. Fluorescent dyes in detergent
Chemiluminescence
Production of light as a direct by-product of a chemical reaction. Almost no heat is produced (“cold light”)
Ex. Glow stick
Bioluminescence
When chemiluminescence occurs in living organisms
Ex. Glow worms, Fireflies
Triboluminescence
Production of light when certain crystals are scratched, crushed or rubbed
Transparent
Material transmits all or almost all incident light; objects can be clearly seen through the material
Translucent
Material transmits some incident light but absorbs or reflects the rest; objects are not clearly seen through the material
Opaque
Material does not transmit any incident light; all incident light is either absorbed or reflected; objects being the material cannot be seen at all
