nervous system Flashcards
PNS
nerves branched off of CNS that allow CNS to communicate with rest of body
somatic nervous system
voluntary actions/skeletal muscle movement
autonomic nervous system
involuntary processes that maintain internal environment (e.g. heart rate, digestion, etc)
parts of autonomic nervous system
sympathetic- “fight or flight”
parasympathetic- “relax and digest”
Nuerons
nerve cells that respond to stimuli and transmit signals
action potential
rapid change in nueron’ s charge
parts of nueron
cell body- organelles
dendrites- pick up impulse
axon- transmit impulse to other cells
types of nuerons
sensory
motor
internuerons
sensory nuerons
pick up message from sense receptors on skin —> transmit to CNS
motor nuerons
transmit impulses from CNS to body (muscle/gland)
interneurons/association nuerons
transmit impulses BETWEEN sensory and motor nuerons
glial cells
support nuerons and signal transmission (e.g. myelin sheaths)
synapse
meeting point between two neurons
1. electrical
2. chemical!
How do neurotransmitters work?
- Action potential activates ion channel
- uons cause synaptic vesicles with message to perform exocytosis
- diffuse across gap
- bind to receptor sites
