Nervous System Flashcards
Controls the voluntary and involuntary ativity of the human body.
Nervous System
Basic functions of the nervous system are:
Controlling and maintaining conscious and aware state
Control sensory stimuli to the brain for interpretation
Controlling motor function and transmitting motor impulses to muscle for voluntary movement
Controlling body through autonomic nervous system
The nervous system is broken down into 2 categories:
Central & Peripheral
This system consists of the brain, spinal chord,.
Central nervous system
The brain has 3 main subdivisions:
Cerebrum, Cerebellum & Brainstem
This part of the brain is the outermost portion which occupies all of the cranial cavity. Controls body functions such as sensation and thought and memory.
Cerebrum
Also called the “small brain” and is located in the posterior and inferior aspect of the cranium. It coordinates muscle activity and maintains balance through impulses from eyes and ears. CANNOT initiate muscle contraction.
Cerebellum
This part of the brain contains the mesencephalon, the pons, and the medulla oblongata.
Brainstem
The medulla oblongata consists of 3 control centers: RVC
Respiratory, vasomotor, Cardiac,
How long is the spinal chord?
18 inches
This system is composed of nerves located outside the spinal cord and brain that permits the sensation of pain and reflexive withdrawal from it.
Peripheral nervous system
What r the 2 functional divisions of the nervous system?
Voluntary & Autonomic
This system influences the activity of skeletal muscles and movements.
Voluntary Nervous System
This system influences the activities of smooth (involuntary) muscles and glands.
Autonomic Nervous System
The autonomic nervous system is divided into 2 systems.
Sympathetic & Parasympathetic
This system is activated when the body is challenged by stressors: trauma, blood loss, fright. Commonly known as “fight or flight”
Sympathetic nervous system
This system returns body process to normal or depresses body function.
Parasympathetic
What r the 2 components that control consciousness?
Cerebral Hemisphere & Recticular Activating System
The cerebral hemisphere consists of what part of the brain?
Large left and right sides of the Cerebrum.
What is continuously transmitting impulses regarding patients surroundings to the brain for constant stimulation and response, also known as “wake and sleep” “on/off center”
RAS (reticular activating system)
