Nervous Flashcards
Traumatic Brain Injury(Concussion and Severe Traumatic Brain Injury)
Concussion: Physical(short-term loss of consciousness, headache, nausea or vomiting, sensitivity to light, dizziness), cognitive(confusion, inability to concentrate, and memory problems, changes in mood, sadness, irritability, fatigue and sleep disturbances
Severe Traumatic Brain Injury: Serious short-term and long-term impairments of brain function, loss of consciousness, amnesia(memory loss), muscle weakness and coordination, changes in emotion, personality, and mood
Spinal Cord Injury
Depend on location of injury, motor, sensory, and internal organ functions may be partly or completely lost
Epilepsy
Vary, ranges from staring spells to the complete loss of motor functions and unconsciousness
Strokes
Numbness, loss of vision, muscle weakness on one side of the face or body, confusion, difficulty walking, speaking and understanding
Trigeminal Neuralgia(Tic Douloureux)
Sudden stabbing pain resembling electric shock in the lips, gums, or chin, triggered by touching the face, chewing, drinking or talking
Bell’s Palsy
Appear suddenly, occurs on one side of the face, and include the inability to salivate, to form tears, blink, and move facial muscles, which results in droopy eyelids, lips and an expressionless face
Bacterial Meningitis
Severe headache, stiff neck, high fever, chills, vomiting, confusion, sensitivity to light, infants(bulging fontanel, irritability, poor reflexes)
Viral Meningitis
Mild symptoms
Encephalitis
Headache, fever, muscle and joints aches and weaknesses, severe cases(severe headache, confusion, perpetual changes, weakness, seizures)
Poliomyelitis(Polio)
Fever, sore throat, headache, weakness, vomiting, stiff neck, backache, paralytic(muscle weakness, atrophy)
Rabies
Fever, headache, agitation, confusion, hallucinations, difficulty swallowing and excess salivation, fear of water(hydrophobia), insomnia, partial paralysis
Shingles(Herpes Zoster)
Band of painful red, water blisters around the trunk, often on one side(may occur on the face, around the eyes, or on other areas), Postherpetic neuralgia(when the pain continues after the rash clears)
Tetanus
Characteristic rigidity, painful muscle spasms, difficulty swallowing, respiratory failure, rigid, flexed jaw is called trismus
Botulism
Infants(constipation, floppy head, difficulty crying and swallowing, drooling and difficulty sucking or feeding
Foodbourne(Droopy facial and eye muscles, difficulty swallowing or speaking, nausea, double vision, vomiting and cramps, difficulty breathing
Wound(Resembles foodbourne botulism)
Reye Syndrome(RS)
Persistent vomiting, rash, lethargy about 1 week after viral infection, seizures and coma
Alzheimer’s Disease
Neurons and connections die, presence of knots of protein deposits called plaques, tangles of protein called neurofibrillary tangles
Signs and Symptoms: Begins with memory loss and confusion, lost memory, spatial and temporal orientation become confused, swings in emotion, personality changes, unable to care for themselves, death from pneumonia, other infections, or injuries from falls and accidents
Multiple Sclerosis(MS)
Numbness, weakness, fatigue, double vision, vision loss
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis(ALS)
Starts with twitching, weakness in limbs and slurred speech, paralysis, inability to chew, swallow, speak and breathe
Parkinson’s Disease
Starts with noticeable shaking in the hands and rigid masklike facial muscles, tremors, stiffness, inability to initiate movement, uncoordinated shuffling gait, hunched posture, loss of reflexes, problems swallowing and chewing, difficulty speaking, cognitive impairment, depression, sexual dysfunction
Essential Tremor
Shaking heads and hands(in “yes” and “no” motion), difficulty eating, drinking from glass, writing and grasping objects, voice tremors
Huntington’s Disease
Jerking and writhing movements, involuntary sustained muscle contraction, difficulty walking, speaking, swallowing and moving eyes, cognitive and mental degenerations(difficulty planning, loss of visual perception, inflexible thinking, impaired memory), loss of judgement and impulse control, angry outbursts, personality changes, death(10-30 years after onset of symptoms
Spina Bifida
Sign and symptoms vary and depend on the extent of the neural tube defect; Occulta and Meningocele doesn’t cause neurological problems; Meningomyelocele and Myelocele are more serious with signs and symptoms such as motor weakness, paralysis, loss of bowel and bladder control
Hydrocephalus
Bulging fontanel, large head, downward-facing eyes(sunsetting), vomiting, seizures, poor feeding, uncoordinated movements possibly leading to permanent motor and cognitive impairments
Cerebral Palsy
Muscle problems(abnormal rigidity or floppiness of muscles, movement is jerky, stiff and writhing, trouble walking, grasping objects, and producing smooth, fine movements, excessive drooling and difficulty swallowing and chewing, hearing and visual impairments, seizures, dental problems, mental and cognitive problems, incontinence
Brain Tumors
More frequent and severe headaches, vision loss and double vision, confusion, dizziness, unexplained vomiting, loss of coordination, speech and hearing problems, personality changes
