Nerves & Vessels Flashcards
Where is the Central nervous system (CNS) located
brain, brain stem, and spinal cord
where is the peripheral nervous system (PNS) located
all other nerves outside the CNS
what are the two types of peripheral nervous systems
- afferent nerves (ascending, sensory)
- efferent nerves ( descending, motor)
afferent nervous system
- travels towards the CNS (ascending)
- relay sensory information from the peripheral sensory receptors to the CNS for processing (touch, vibrations, etc. )
efferent nervous system
- travels away from the CNS (descending)
- relay motos information from the CNS to muscles and glands
where does the spinal cord end
around TXII - LII
what is the point at the end of the spinal cord
conus medullaris
what is the part of the spinal cord where the nerves branch off
cauda equina
what is the labeling method for nerves in the vertebrae
vertebrae- numerals
nerves- numbers
what is the hole in the base of the skull where the spinal cord leaves the skull to enter the vertebrae
foramen magnum
where is the cranial nerve located, how many, and what is the role it plays
location- emerges from the brain stem
how many- 12 cranial nerves
role- visual, respiratory, cardiovascular, digestive, and motor systems
what does IVF stand for
intervertebral foramen
where do the spinal nerves exit
spinal nerves exit the spinal canal through the IVF
how many spinal nerves for cervical vertebrae
C1-C8
how many spinal nerves for thoracic vertebrae
T1-T12
how many spinal nerves for lumbar veretbrae
L1-L5
how many spinal nerves for sacral vertebrae
S1-S5
how many spinal nerves for the coccygeal
one spinal nerve (Co)
where do the spinal nerves exit the IVF for cervical vertebrae
above the corresponding vertebrae
where do the spinal nerves exit the IVF for thoracic and lumbar vertebrae
below the corresponding vertebrae
