Meningitis or sepsis or both
What antibiotic do you give for meningitis?
Ceftriaxone a cephalosporin
What investigations would you do?
CSF sampling (lumbar puncture) Check for rash Gram stain Oxidase positivity test FBC, U+E
What shape are they microscopically?
gram negative diplococci
What are the virulence factors for Neisseria meningitides?
Pili
Anti-phagocytic polysaccharide capsule
Multiple serotypes and serogroups
Endotoxins
Is it motile?
no
Who gets it?
young patient present acutely unwell to ED
People who are in close contact with lots of people
Complement deficient patients
Recent RTI
What calendar time increases incidence?
winter
What behavioural activity increases risk?
Smoking- even passive
