Describe the gram stain
Gram negative coccobacilli
Who tends to be affected?
babies and young children
What will FBC show?
FBC can be up or down, but neutrophils will tend to be high
What type of culture should you do?
Chocolate agar
What two modes of spread are there?
Exogenous from droplets. Endogenous from a carrier in the reparatory tract.
Which immunoglobulin does it cleave?
IgA so can access mucous membranes
What is passage of an infection like this into the blood called?
Dissemination
Who do we vaccinate?
Asplenic patients
Young babies
What would you give in a haemophilia influenza sepsis?
Gentamycin
Are asplenic or hyposplenic patients at risk of developing this infection?
Yes it has a capsule and without a spleen we can’t make enough antibodies so the infection is overwhelming
