What are some key neglected disease?
- Schistomiasis
- Onchoceriasis (river Blindness)
- Lymphatic Filariasis (Elephaniasis)
- Guinea Worm
Onchoceriasis is also known as?
River Blindness
What is the vector in River Blindness?
A fly
What are the symptoms of River Blindness?
Eye lesions that can eventually lead to blindness, and skin lesions (children often leading around their parents with a stick due to blindness).
What could eliminate the disease?
1 mg/kg of Mectizan once a year eliminates the Onchocerciasis disease!
What does Trachoma cause?
It causes blindness; disease of the eye, bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis (threatens to blind 10% of the population!)
Why is the Trachoma disease overlooked?
its hidden in communities with over crowded conditions, limited water.
How is Trachoma spread?
spread on infected person’s hands or clothing or may be carried by flies that have come in contact with discharge of the infected person’s nose or eyes.
Who is more likely to be blinded by Trachoma?
Women are 3x more likely to be blinded, blindness is slowly (takes years)
What is the second most tropical disease besides Malaria?
Schistosomiasis; disease caused by blood born fluke (lives in snails)
Where did Schistosomiasis originate?
In Africa; carried to South America with slave trade (Brazil, Caribbean)
What are the symptoms of Schistosomiasis?
-blood in urine, anemia, impaired growth, poor cognition, bladder cancer, kidney malfunction, liver and spleen complications.
What is the transmission cycle of Schistosomiasis?
Snail Host lays larvae in water, larvae swim in hair folicals of human swimming in water, human carries disease.
does Schistosomiasis exemplify the burden of disease?
Yes, only in low income countries.
