Why is women’s status hard to measure?
It is based on inequality between the sexes, particularly in areas of
- power
- prestige
- esteem
- access to and control over resources
Decision making autonomy
economic: purchasing food, HH goods, jewelry
child-related: discipline, illness, education
Freedom of mobility
go un-escorted to health center; friend’s house, family, market, etc
Freedom from threat
perceptions about violence, experience of violence, fear of violence
Access to economic resources
say in how HH $ is spent; has access to cash and freedom to spend it
Control over economic resources
Family assets controlled by wife; can she support herself w/ her savings in old age
Why is women’s status important?
measures gender equality and gender discrimination which has a relationship between gender equality and health (related to declines in infant and maternal mortality, better family health, higher levels of national development, well being and happiness for women!)
What is gender?
The economic, social and cultural attributes and opportunities associated with being male or female in a particular social setting at a particular point in time.
What is gender inequality?
Unequal treatment of women and men in laws and policies, and unequal access to resources and services within families, communities and society at large.
Gender as a system is based on….
Those who make decisions and have power are the ones who influence social beliefs and gender norms for behavior, sexual dvidion of labor, and access to and control over resources.
